How to convert kg to lbs, with a chart from 1 to 150 kg

Multiply kilograms by 2.20462 and you have pounds. Below you find the exact factor, a chart to look things up, the two luggage limits people check before a flight and the way back from pounds to kilograms.

The short answer

1 kg is 2.20462 lb, so multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. 80 kg × 2.20462 = 176.37 lb. To go from pounds to kilograms, multiply by 0.45359237: 150 lb is 68.04 kg.

How to convert kg to lbs

To convert kg to lbs, multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. The factor comes from the definition of the pound: one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg. One kilogram is therefore 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046226… pounds. Five decimals are plenty for everyday use.

An old-style balance scale in balance, with one large block weight on the left pan and several smaller round weights on the right pan.
One kilogram balances a little more than two pounds: 1 kg = 2.20462 lb.
  1. Multiply by 2.20462

    65 kg × 2.20462 = 143.30 lb.

  2. Round to what you need

One decimal is enough for luggage and body weight: 143.3 lb.

  3. Turn the decimals into ounces, if you want

    Multiply the decimal part by 16. 0.30 × 16 ≈ 5 ounces, so 65 kg is about 143 lb 5 oz.

KG to LBS chart: 1 to 150 kg

The chart lists 1 to 10 kg in steps of one, then 15 to 150 kg in steps of five, all converted with the exact factor. The middle column rounds to one decimal. The right column shows the same weight in pounds and ounces, rounded to the nearest ounce.

For a weight between two rows, multiply by 2.20462 yourself, or add two rows together. 73 kg × 2.20462 = 160.94 lb. The 70 kg row plus the 3 kg row gives 154.3 + 6.6 = 160.9 lb, the same to one decimal.

Do not read the decimals as ounces. 4.4 lb is not 4 lb 4 oz: 0.4 lb is 0.4 × 16 = 6.4 oz, and 2 kg is about 4 lb 7 oz. For small things like a parcel or a bag of flour, the ounces column is the one to use.

50, 60, 80 and 100 kg in pounds

50 kg is 110.2 lb, 60 kg is 132.3 lb, 80 kg is 176.4 lb and 100 kg is 220.5 lb. The list below gives the same four with two decimals, for when you need to add them up.

If your scale shows kilograms with one decimal, keep one decimal in pounds too. 72.4 kg becomes 159.6 lb. Writing 159.615 lb would suggest a precision your scale does not have.

Watch out for the rounded factor 2.2. It is close, but the gap grows with the weight. On 100 kg, 2.2 gives 220 lb instead of 220.46 lb, 0.46 lb too little.

  • 50 kg = 110.23 lb
  • 60 kg = 132.28 lb
  • 80 kg = 176.37 lb
  • 100 kg = 220.46 lb

23 kg and 32 kg in pounds: checked-bag limits

23 kg is 50.71 lb and 32 kg is 70.55 lb. These two numbers show up on airline baggage pages, often next to 50 lb and 70 lb. The pairs are rounded, and they are not exactly the same weight.

Air Canada’s checked-bag page, for example, writes the limit as 23 kg/50 lb. Delta’s page writes 70 lb as 31.75 kg. A bag that weighs exactly 23 kg is 0.71 lb over 50 lb, and a bag of exactly 32 kg is 0.55 lb over 70 lb. When an airline gives a limit in both units, pack for the smaller one.

Weigh the bag at home, then compare it with the limit in the unit your airline uses.
  1. Find your own limit

Look it up on your booking or on your airline’s baggage page. It depends on the airline, the route and the fare, so do not rely on a number from another trip.

  2. Weigh the packed bag

Hang the bag from a luggage scale by its handle and lift until it hangs freely. Read the number when it stops moving.

  3. Convert and leave a margin

Convert to the unit your airline uses and compare with the smaller number of the pair. Leave some room, because your scale and the airport scale may not agree exactly.

Pounds to kg: how to convert lbs to kg

To convert lbs to kg, multiply the pounds by 0.45359237, or divide them by 2.20462. 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.04 kg.

The quick version in your head: halve the pounds and take away a tenth of the half. 150 lb halved is 75, minus 7.5 gives 67.5 kg. That is about 0.8% below the exact 68.04 kg.

Stones and pounds: kg to stone

One stone is 14 pounds, which is 6.35 kg (exactly 6.35029318 kg). Stone is a British unit. A weight in stones is written as stones plus pounds, such as 12 st 8 lb.

To get there from kilograms, convert to pounds, then divide by 14. The whole number is the stones; what is left over is the pounds. 80 kg is 176.37 lb, and 176.37 ÷ 14 = 12 with 8.4 lb left over: 12 st 8.4 lb.

The Unit Converter has “Stone (st)” under “Mass”, but it answers in decimal stones: 80 kg shows as 12.5978 st. Multiply the decimal part by 14 to get the pounds: 0.5978 × 14 ≈ 8.4 lb.
