How to turn a video into a GIF

  1. Add the video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, or choose one.

  2. Trim and set the size

Play the video and press Start here and End here around the moment. 480 px and 15 fps are a good balance.

  3. Make the GIF

Press Make the GIF, check the loop and download it.

Which format should I choose?

MP4 plays everywhere: phones, TVs, Windows and every website. MOV is Apple’s format for iPhone, iMovie and Final Cut, WebM the open format of the web, often smaller. When the video already uses a codec the new format can carry, it is copied as it is – no quality loss, done in seconds.

MP3 plays on every phone, car and speaker – the right choice for music and podcasts taken from your own videos. M4A keeps the original AAC sound of a phone video bit for bit, so it is the best quality and is ready at once. WAV is uncompressed, for editing programs.

GIF loops silently in chats, emails and websites; keep it short and around 480 px wide. Social turns a landscape video into an upright 9:16 one (or square, or back to 16:9) – either cropped to the centre or fitted onto a blurred background.

Good to know

Everything runs with your browser’s own video and sound decoders, so current Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox work on computers and phones. Very old browsers cannot write MP4 videos; the sound formats still work there in most cases. To make a video smaller, or to turn many MOV files into MP4 at once, use our Video Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a GIF be?

There is no hard limit, but GIFs grow fast: a few seconds at 480 px are usually a few megabytes. The estimate under the settings shows the expected size before you start.

Does the GIF keep the sound?

No. GIF is a picture format without sound. For a short clip with sound, choose Social or keep the MP4.

Is the Video Converter free?

Yes. It is free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Are my videos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser on your device. The video never reaches our server or anyone else.

Can I convert MOV to MP4 or MP4 to MOV?

Yes. Choose Video, then MP4, MOV or WebM, and press Convert. iPhone and camera videos are usually copied into the new format as they are, so they keep their full quality and are ready in seconds; HEVC videos become H.264 in an MP4 so they play everywhere.

Do I lose quality when I change the video format?

Not when the picture can be copied – the tool then only changes the file around it, and tells you so before you start. When it has to be encoded again, for example an MP4 into WebM, it uses a high bitrate, so the difference is hard to see.

Can I convert YouTube or TikTok links?

No. The tool converts files that are on your device. To get your own uploads back, use the download options of the platform, such as YouTube Studio or TikTok’s save button.

Which MP3 quality should I choose?

192 kbit/s is a good default for music and speech. 320 kbit/s is the maximum MP3 setting; it only helps if the video’s own sound was of high quality.

Why is my GIF so big?

GIFs store every frame as a picture with at most 256 colours. Shorter clips, a smaller width and fewer frames per second make them much smaller; the size estimate updates as you change them.
