Second language
Shows a translation under the captions – great for language learners and international audiences.
Translate the captions into another language. The timing stays, and you can correct every line.
The original captions are in the wrong language? This writes them again in the language that is actually spoken or sung (undo brings the old ones back).
Each translation becomes its own language. Switch between them under Captions, export each one, or show two at once under Style.
Video with captions (MP4)
The captions are burned into the picture, exactly as in the preview – for TikTok, Reels, Shorts, WhatsApp and every player.
This browser cannot create videos. Use a current Chrome, Edge or Safari – the subtitle files below work everywhere.
Subtitle files
For YouTube, Vimeo and editing programs: upload the file next to your video. ASS keeps your look; LRC is for song lyrics.
Project
Saves captions, translations and look as a small file. Open it later together with the same video to continue.
Your video stays with you. Recognition, translation and the MP4 are all made on your device. Only the AI models are downloaded once.
No watermark, no minute limit. Export as many videos as you like, in Full HD or up to 4K.
How to add subtitles to a video
Drop your video
MP4, MOV, WEBM and most phone videos work – songs and podcasts too. Choose the spoken language, or let it be detected.
Let the AI write the captions
Whisper listens and times every word. In a minute or two you have captions you can correct line by line, on the timeline or in the list.
Style, translate, export
Pick a look, drag the captions where you want them, add languages, then create an MP4 with burned-in subtitles or save SRT for YouTube.
Everything a subtitle editor needs
- Word-accurate timing – every word has its own time, so captions highlight the spoken word like karaoke.
- Seven looks, fully adjustable – font, size, colours, outline, glow, background box, position, animation.
- Timeline editing – drag captions, stretch their edges, split, merge, find and replace, shift everything at once.
- Any format – keep the original, or turn a landscape video into 9:16, 1:1 or 4:5 with a blurred background.
- Songs and podcasts – audio becomes a video with a backdrop, your cover image and moving sound bars.
- Two languages at once – show a translation under the original captions.
Why captions matter
Most people scroll social media with the sound off. Captions keep them watching, make videos accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers and help search engines understand what is said. Burned-in captions show everywhere – in WhatsApp, on TikTok, Reels and Shorts – while an SRT file lets YouTube show subtitles that viewers can switch on and off.
Free, and without uploading
Most online subtitle editors upload your video to their servers, add a watermark and cap free use at a few minutes. Subtitle Studio runs the open Whisper model from OpenAI and the video encoder in your own browser. Your footage never leaves your device, so it also suits unreleased work, client videos and private recordings.
Recognition and translation languages
Whisper recognises about 99 spoken languages. Translations use the translator built into Chrome on computers (about 40 languages) or downloadable Opus-MT models elsewhere (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and more). Each translation keeps the timing of the original and can be corrected line by line.
Tips for great captions
- Use Short captions for vertical social videos and Long for interviews and films.
- Turn on the safe zones before export, so app buttons do not cover the text.
- Choose Accurate recognition for music, dialects and noisy rooms.
- Read names and numbers once before you publish.

Frequently asked questions
Is Subtitle Studio really free?
Yes. No account, no subscription, no watermark and no limit on minutes or videos. The site is funded by fair advertising, not by your videos.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read, transcribed, translated and encoded in your browser. Only the AI models are downloaded once from Hugging Face (and the translator from Chrome itself); your video is never sent anywhere.
Which formats work?
Videos your browser can play – MP4, MOV, WEBM, MKV – and audio such as MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and FLAC. You can import SRT, VTT, LRC and ASS subtitles. The result is an MP4 (H.264) that plays everywhere, or SRT, VTT, ASS, LRC and text files.
How long does it take?
On a computer with a current graphics chip a one-minute video is transcribed in about 10–20 seconds and exported in a few seconds. Phones take longer; you see the progress and a time estimate.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes. Pick a video from your gallery, edit the captions with your finger and share the finished MP4 straight to TikTok, Instagram or WhatsApp. For long videos a computer is faster.
Can I move the captions?
Yes. Drag them up or down on the preview, or set the position, width and number of lines under Style. The safe-zone overlay shows where TikTok and Reels place their buttons.
