Start from a layout
Your photos stay on this device. Editing, AI background removal and export run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. The AI files download from this website only the first time you remove a background.
Good to know: AI cut-outs vary with the picture, and fine hair or glass can need a touch-up with the brush. Only edit images you have the right to use (terms of use).
Step by step
How to remove the background from a photo
Three steps, no account. On this page the background tools sit at the top of the settings.
Open the photo
Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP or drop it on step 1. Phone photos of up to 24 megapixels open at full detail.
Pick the AI mode
General subject suits products, pets, cars and objects; Portrait / people follows hair and shoulders more closely. Then tap Remove background.
Check the edges and export
Look closely at the live preview, erase leftovers or bring back lost parts with the brush, and create a PNG or WebP to keep the transparency.
The first cut-out downloads the AI model once (about 19 MB for General, 21 MB for Portrait); after that it starts right away.

Tips for a clean cut-out
- Contrast helps: a subject that stands out from its background gives the cleanest edges. A dark coat in front of a dark wall needs more brush work.
- Keep the whole subject in the frame: the AI works best with the complete person or object. Crop tightly after removing the background, not before.
- Hair and fur: use Portrait for people. Fine strands can keep a hint of the old background – a slightly darker or lighter new background hides it.
- Glass and shadows: see-through and blurred parts are a guess for any AI. Restore or erase them with a small brush.
Replace it
Put the subject on a new background
Under Replace with, keep the background transparent or choose a solid color, a two-color gradient or your own picture. Subject shadow adds a soft drop shadow, so a product does not look pasted on.
For a profile or job application photo, pick plain white or light gray and export as JPG. For stickers, logos and online shops, keep it transparent and export as PNG or WebP.

Frequently asked questions
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. Every cut-out is free at full resolution up to 16 megapixels, with no credits, no watermark and no account.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The AI model is downloaded to your browser once, and the cut-out is calculated on your device. Your photo never leaves it.
Which format keeps the transparent background?
PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot store it and fills the empty area with the JPG background color you choose.
Can I remove a background on my phone?
Yes, in recent mobile browsers with WebAssembly SIMD, such as Chrome, Safari and Samsung Internet. Very large photos need more memory; if one fails, use the camera’s standard 12 MP size.
Why does the edge look rough in places?
The AI predicts the outline at a lower resolution than your photo, and Image Studio then refines it against the photo’s own pixels. Busy backgrounds, glass and fine strands can still need a few strokes of Erase background or Restore subject.
