The short answer
Add height for a round face, use texture on a square face, keep an oblong face from growing taller with a side part and fringe, and add width at the jaw for heart and diamond faces. Triangle faces like volume on top; oval faces wear most cuts. A beard changes the jaw line, so plan it together with the haircut.
Open the free toolHow to determine your face shape as a man
Men’s face shapes are the same seven as everyone’s: oval, round, square, oblong, heart, diamond and triangle. Measure your forehead, cheekbones and jaw across and your face from hairline to chin, then see which part is widest and how long the face is compared with its width. Our face shapes guide walks through each measurement.
Two things trip men up. A beard hides the real jaw, so measure under it. A receding hairline makes the face look longer; measure from where the hairline used to be.
Add a photo
Open the Face Shape Detector and add a straight-on photo, or tap “Take a selfie” on a phone: hair back, glasses off, relaxed face, camera at eye level. The photo is measured in your browser and not uploaded.
Check the hairline
The tool estimates where your hairline is. If the line is off, drag it or use “Adjust hairline”; the result updates as you move it.

Male face shapes and hairstyles: the chart
This chart pairs each face shape with cuts that balance it and a beard that fits. Use it to start a conversation with your barber, not as a rulebook.

| Face shape | Haircuts to try | Go easier on | Beard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oval | Quiff, side part, textured crop, crew cut, buzz cut | A heavy fringe over the whole forehead | Most styles, kept balanced |
| Round | Pompadour, quiff, faux hawk, side part with height, short sides or a fade | The same length all over; a heavy straight fringe | Longer at the chin, short on the cheeks |
| Square | Textured crop, side part, crew cut, buzz cut, short quiff | Very blunt, boxy shapes if you want a softer look | Light stubble or a rounded short beard |
| Oblong | Side part with fringe, crew cut without height, fuller sides | Tall pompadours; very short sides under a high top | Fuller on the sides, short at the chin |
| Heart | Medium fringe, side part with medium length on top | Lots of height with very tight sides | Fuller at the chin |
| Diamond | Textured fringe, messy quiff, medium length swept back | Very short sides next to wide cheekbones | Full beard |
| Triangle | Volume on top and at the crown, textured quiff | Full, wide sides at jaw level | Short and neat at the sides |
Haircuts for oval, round and square faces
Oval faces are easy to cut for. A short back and sides with length on top, styled into a quiff or side part, keeps the forehead visible; a buzz cut works too. Only a very heavy fringe makes the face look rounder.
Round faces gain shape from height and clean sides. A pompadour, quiff or faux hawk adds length on top, and a fade keeps width off the cheeks. A side part with some lift draws a straight line through the curves.
Square faces have a strong jaw and a straight forehead, and short, tidy cuts suit that structure. A textured crop, a side part, a crew cut or a buzz cut with light stubble all work, and texture on top softens the angles.
Haircuts for long, heart, diamond and triangle faces
Oblong faces are long with similar widths, so avoid adding length: a side part with a fringe or a flat crew cut keeps the top low, and slightly fuller sides add width. Tall pompadours over very short sides make the face look longer.
Heart faces are wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin. A medium fringe or a side part with medium length on top keeps volume down and covers some forehead. Very tight cuts with a lot of height make the chin look narrower.
Diamond faces have wide cheekbones and a narrow forehead and chin. A textured fringe adds width at the forehead, and medium-length hair swept back or tucked behind the ears softens the cheekbones.
Triangle faces have a jaw wider than the forehead. Volume on top and at the crown, such as a textured quiff, balances the jaw; keep the sides neat rather than full at jaw level.
Beard styles for face shape: which one suits yours
A beard changes the outline of the lower face, so it can add width, length or angles where your shape needs them. The basic rule: length at the chin makes a face look longer, short cheeks make it look narrower, and fuller sides add width.

- Stubble: a few days of growth. Suits almost every shape; on a square face it keeps the angles without adding bulk.
- Short boxed beard: short and even with clean lines along the cheeks and neck. It stays close to the jaw, which suits oblong and triangle faces.
- Goatee: hair on the chin, often with a mustache. It lengthens a round face and adds weight to the narrow chin of a heart face.
- Full beard: cheeks, jaw and chin. It adds width at the jaw for heart and diamond faces; on a round face, keep the cheeks short and the chin longer.
- Chin strap: a narrow line along the jaw from sideburn to sideburn. It traces and defines the jaw, which suits oval faces and round faces that want more definition.
- Balbo: a chin beard without sideburns plus a separate mustache. It adds fullness at the chin for heart and diamond faces.
- Anchor: a pointed beard along the chin, joined to a mustache. It adds length, which suits round faces.
How to ask your barber for the right cut
Tell your barber the result you want, not only the name of a cut. Names like quiff or crop mean slightly different things in different shops, so show and describe.
Bring photos
Show two or three photos of the cut from the front and the side, ideally on hair like yours: straight, wavy, curly or coily, fine or thick.
Name the lengths
Say how long you want it on top, in inches, centimeters or finger widths, and how short on the sides and back. Guard numbers are a handy shorthand, for example “a 2 on the sides, a 4 at the back”, but clipper sets number their guards differently, so ask what a number means there.
Choose the blend
Say whether you want a fade, where the sides go down to skin or nearly, a taper that gets shorter toward the neck, or one length all the way. Mention where your part sits.
Explain your routine
Say how much time you spend styling and whether you use product. A pompadour needs a blow-dryer and product most mornings; a crew cut needs almost nothing.
Questions you might still have
What is the best haircut for my face shape?
The one that balances your outline and suits your hair and routine. Roughly: height for round, texture for square, a flat top and fringe for oblong, fullness at the jaw for heart and diamond, volume on top for triangle. Oval faces can pick almost anything.
How do I determine my face shape as a man?
Measure forehead, cheekbones and jaw across and the face from hairline to chin, without a beard in the way. Find the widest part and compare length with width, or add a photo to the Face Shape Detector.
Which beard suits a round face?
One that is longer at the chin and short on the cheeks, such as a goatee, an anchor or a full beard trimmed shorter at the sides. It makes the face look longer.
Does a beard change your face shape?
Not the bones, but how the jaw looks. A beard can make a jaw look wider, longer, sharper or softer, which is why barbers plan beard and haircut together.
What haircut suits a receding hairline?
Many barbers suggest shorter cuts such as a buzz cut, a crew cut or a textured crop, which look neat as the hairline changes and need little styling. Longer styles work too if you like them.
What does “a 2 on the sides” mean?
It names the clipper guard used on the sides. The length behind each number differs between clipper sets, so ask your barber, or say the length you want in millimeters or inches.
Before you go
Find your shape, pick a cut that adds what your face is missing, and choose the beard at the same time. Then bring photos and say the lengths out loud; that does more for the result than any chart.
