The short answer
A year has 52 weeks and 1 day, or 52 weeks and 2 days in a leap year. As a decimal, that is 52.14 or 52.29 weeks. In ISO week numbers, a year has 52 or 53 weeks, and 2026 has 53.
Open the free toolWhy 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day
A year of 365 days is 52 weeks and 1 day, because 52 × 7 = 364. A leap year has 366 days, so it is 52 weeks and 2 days.
As a decimal, a common year is 52.14 weeks and a leap year is 52.29 weeks. The calendar has 97 leap years in every 400 years, so the average year is 365.2425 days, or 52.1775 weeks.
The extra day is also why dates move. Your birthday falls one weekday later each year, and two weekdays later when a 29 February comes in between.

Divide the days by 7
365 ÷ 7 = 52, with 1 day left over.
Check for a leap year
A year that divides by 4 is a leap year. Century years are the exception: they must also divide by 400. 2028 is a leap year, 2100 is not.
Count the leftover days
A leap year has 366 days. 366 ÷ 7 = 52, with 2 days left over.
How many weeks are in 2026?
2026 has 52 weeks and 1 day, because it is not a leap year. In ISO week numbers, which the next section explains, 2026 has 53 weeks.
The extra day is a Thursday. 2026 starts on Thursday 1 January 2026 and ends on Thursday 31 December 2026. So it has 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday. It has 261 weekdays from Monday to Friday.
Week 53 of 2026 runs from Monday 28 December 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027. Week 1 of 2026 began on Monday 29 December 2025. So the first days of January can carry the last week number of the year before, and the last days of December can belong to week 1 of the next year.
Which years have 53 weeks? ISO week numbers explained
A year has 53 ISO weeks when 1 January falls on a Thursday, or on a Wednesday in a leap year. Every other year has 52.
ISO 8601 is the international standard for writing dates and weeks. Its weeks run from Monday to Sunday, and week 1 is the week that holds the first Thursday of the year. Eurostat, the statistics office of the EU, uses this rule in its surveys and names 2026 as a year with 53 weeks.
Why Thursday? It is the middle day of a Monday-to-Sunday week. When the Thursday is in the new year, at least four of the seven days are too, so the whole week counts for the new year.
In one full 400-year cycle of the calendar, 71 years have 53 ISO weeks, about one year in 5.6. Between 2020 and 2035 they are 2020, 2026 and 2032. The table is calculated day by day.

How many work weeks are in a year?
Start with 52 weeks, then take away your vacation and the public holidays that fall on your work days. There is no single number for everyone, because holidays and leave depend on your country, your state and your employer.
Every year has 260 to 262 weekdays from Monday to Friday: 52 weeks of five days, plus the one or two extra days when they fall on a weekday. Here is a worked example for 2026. The vacation days are an example number; use your own.

Count the weekdays
2026 has 261 weekdays, Monday to Friday.
Take away public holidays
The US federal government lists 11 holidays for 2026, all on weekdays: 261 − 11 = 250 days. Use the holidays that apply where you work.
Take away your vacation
With 15 days of vacation: 250 − 15 = 235 work days.
Turn the days into weeks
For a five-day week, divide by 5: 235 ÷ 5 = 47 work weeks.
How many weeks until a date, or between two dates?
Count the days between the two dates and divide by 7. The Date Calculator does both and shows the answer in weeks and days.
Enter the dates
Open the Date Calculator. Under “Days between dates”, fill in “Start date” and “End date”. The start date is today when the page opens.
Choose how to count
Leave “Include the end date” empty to count the days between the dates. Tick it when both dates count as full days, for example a holiday from the 1st to the 10th.
Read the result
Press “Count the days”. Below the days you see “Weeks”, written as weeks and days, and “Weekdays (Mon–Fri)”.
- From 27 October 2026 to 25 December 2026: 59 days, which is 8 weeks 3 days.
- From 1 January 2026 to 1 January 2027: 365 days, which is 52 weeks 1 day.
- 12 weeks after 27 October 2026: under “Add or subtract time”, type 84 in “Days”, because 12 × 7 = 84, and press “Find the date”. The result is Tuesday 19 January 2027.
How many weeks are in a month and in a quarter?
A month has 4 weeks plus 0 to 3 days. Only February in a common year is exactly 4 weeks. A 31-day month is 4 weeks 3 days.
On average, a month has 365 ÷ 12 = 30.42 days, which is 4.35 weeks. If you work with 52 weeks a year, 52 ÷ 12 gives 4.33 weeks per month. Both are averages, so no real month has exactly that many weeks.
A quarter has about 13 weeks: 90 to 92 days.
| Period | Days | Weeks and days | Weeks (decimal) |
|---|---|---|---|
| February, common year | 28 | 4 weeks | 4.00 |
| February, leap year | 29 | 4 weeks 1 day | 4.14 |
| April, June, September, November | 30 | 4 weeks 2 days | 4.29 |
| The other seven months | 31 | 4 weeks 3 days | 4.43 |
| Q1, January to March | 90 | 12 weeks 6 days | 12.86 |
| Q1 in a leap year | 91 | 13 weeks | 13.00 |
| Q2, April to June | 91 | 13 weeks | 13.00 |
| Q3, July to September | 92 | 13 weeks 1 day | 13.14 |
| Q4, October to December | 92 | 13 weeks 1 day | 13.14 |
