The short answer
Open Planner Studio’s meal plan, write a dish into each day’s box, add a shopping list page and fill it aisle by aisle from your dishes. Download both pages as one PDF, hang the plan on the fridge and take the list along – or tick it off on your phone.

Each step is also explained in writing.
- Write the dinners first: tap a box and type the dish.
- Add breakfasts too, or leave boxes empty to fill in by hand.
- Add a page and choose the shopping list.
- Put each ingredient into its aisle – suggestions appear as you type.
- Download both pages as one PDF, or tick the list off on your phone.
Why a meal plan saves time and money
Deciding late means shopping late: a quick stop on the way home for one missing ingredient often ends with a full basket. A plan turns the week into one list, uses up what you already have and makes it easy to cook a little more on one day for the next.
- Fewer trips to the shop and fewer impulse buys.
- Leftovers get a slot instead of the bin.
- Everyone knows what is for dinner – the plan answers the question for you.
Plan the week in five steps
Open the meal plan
Open the meal planner page: the days are columns, breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are rows. Rename them or add one such as “Lunch box”.
Start with the evenings
Tap the dinner boxes in the preview and write the dishes first – they need the most shopping. Plan one evening for leftovers and one for something quick.
Fill in the rest
Add breakfasts, lunches and snacks, or leave those boxes empty to fill in by hand. Long names shrink to fit their box.
Add the shopping list
Select “Add a page” and choose “Shopping list”. Go through your dishes and add each ingredient to its aisle; suggestions appear as you type.
Print or take it along
Choose “All pages as PDF”: plan and list print together. On your phone, keep the list open in the shop and tick items off.
Tips for a plan that works
Plan with what you have: look into the fridge and the cupboard first and build two or three meals around it. Repeat favorites – a fixed pasta night or soup day makes planning faster. Cook once, eat twice: a big pot of chili on Monday is Wednesday’s burrito filling.
Keep the shopping list in the order of your shop. Rename or move the aisles once, and every week’s list leads you through the shop without walking back.
For families, couples and one-person homes
Families can let the children choose one dinner each week and write it into the plan themselves. Couples who work different hours mark who cooks in the box. If you cook for one, plan four dinners and two leftover days – the shopping stays small and nothing spoils.
Start with attendance, not recipes
Write down who is eating at home before choosing dishes. An illustrative week for two people might have one shared dinner missing because of work and one lunch already provided elsewhere. Mark those slots so the plan does not silently assume extra meals. Decide whether packed lunches need a separate row. The row labels should describe the meal you are responsible for, without filling gaps merely to make a complete-looking table. When a household member cannot confirm a day, write the uncertainty in notes and choose which decision can wait until the shopping list is final.
Consolidate ingredients without buying them twice
Read each proposed meal and write the ingredients you need, then compare the combined list with the cupboard. Two recipes using the same ingredient do not necessarily require two full packages. In a worked example, mark a partly used packet as already available before adding another one. Planner Studio does not calculate recipe quantities or check stock. Use its shopping list to keep the final decision together rather than expecting the dish name to generate products. Distinguish a required ingredient from an optional garnish so a forgotten decoration does not force another trip to the shop.
Plan a controlled change when the week moves
Choose which dinner is flexible before the week starts. If a meeting runs late, use that slot rather than abandoning the entire plan. Keep a brief alternative in the notes with ingredients you know you will have. This does not determine whether stored food is safe; check the relevant labels and official guidance separately. Tell the other cook when you change the evening, because a browser edit does not update a paper sheet already on the fridge. Put the revised date on any replacement PDF so two different menus do not remain in circulation.
Review the list after the first shopping trip
After trying the plan, note what was missing and what remained unused. Ask whether the cause was an incorrect quantity, an absent person or a dish that needed more effort than the available evening allowed. Adjust the next page rather than calling the whole method a failure. The plan is not a spending report: compare actual receipts separately if cost matters. Keep a duplicate of a useful blank layout, then change the meals. A short, legible dish name and enough writing space matter more than repeating the full recipe title in every small box.
Questions you might still have
How do I turn my meal plan into a shopping list?
Add a shopping list page in the same planner and add the ingredients of each dish to their aisle. Both pages download as one PDF, and the list can be shared as text.
Can I use the shopping list on my phone?
Yes. Open the page in the shop and tick items off; the list stays saved in your phone’s browser. “Share list” sends it to a message or a notes app.
Can I print a blank meal planner?
Yes. Leave the boxes empty, pick a design and download the PDF – print as many copies as you like and fill them in by hand.
Does a dish name generate ingredients?
No. Read the recipe and enter products and quantities yourself. Combine shared ingredients and check the cupboard before finalising the list.
Does the plan assess stored food?
No. It does not determine safety or shelf life. Follow packaging instructions and appropriate official storage guidance separately.
How do I keep a change clear?
Replace the visible menu and mark its dates or version. A browser edit does not update an earlier PDF already given to another cook.
Before you go
Dinners first, one leftover night, one shopping list in the order of your shop – ten minutes on Sunday buy you a calmer week.
