The short answer
Open Cut Studio’s silence page and choose your video or recording. It marks every pause longer than 0.7 seconds right away. Check the preview, select “Export”, keep “Video (MP4)” and choose “Export now”. For ums, turn on “Recognize the words too” first.

Each step is also explained in writing.
- Choose the example video with spoken words and pauses.
- Cut Studio measures the sound and marks every longer pause.
- Marked pauses are cut; the preview jumps over them.
- Open the export and keep MP4 for video with sound.
- Export now. The shorter video is saved on this device.
How Cut Studio finds the pauses
Cut Studio measures the loudness of your recording every 20 milliseconds and learns how quiet your room is. Only silence longer than your threshold is cut, and a short breath stays on both sides, so the speech keeps its rhythm instead of sounding chopped. Silence before the first and after the last word goes completely.
Because it listens to the sound level rather than to words, finding pauses needs no AI download and works in any language. On our test computer, the pauses of a ten-minute video were marked in about a second.
Cut the pauses in four steps
Open your file
Select “Choose a file” and pick a video or a sound file, for example a phone recording or a podcast episode. It stays on your device.
Set the threshold
Under “Shorten pauses”, “Pauses longer than” starts at 0.7 seconds and “Breath that stays” at 0.2 seconds. Raise the threshold for a calmer style; lower it for fast social media clips.
Check the preview
Every cut pause appears crossed out in the text and on the timeline. Play the preview: it jumps over the cuts exactly as the finished file will. Click a pause to keep it after all.
Export
Select “Export”, keep “Video (MP4)” – or “Sound only (M4A)” for a podcast – and choose “Export now”. The shorter file is saved on your device.
Remove ums and repeated words
Pauses are only half of it. Turn on “Recognize the words too”: a speech model then writes down every word, and Cut Studio can mark hesitations with “Remove ums and stray sounds” and phrases like “I I think” with “Remove doubled words”. The model downloads once and then runs in your browser.
With a graphics chip, the words of a ten-minute video were ready in about one and a half minutes on our test computer. Phones work too; there, clips of up to about 15 to 20 minutes are the safe choice.
Edit the video like a document
Once the words are there, the transcript becomes your editor. Click a word to jump to it; drag across several words to cut a whole sentence; press Ctrl+Z to undo. Every cut gets a key frame and a short fade, so there are no jumps in the picture and no clicks in the sound.
Your edits are kept in this browser. If you close the tab by mistake, open the same file again and continue where you stopped.
- Delete a false start instead of recording the sentence again.
- Keep a deliberate pause before a punchline by clicking it.
- Export subtitles timed to the edited video as SRT or VTT.
Choose the right file
A cut list keeps your edit without encoding a new video: your editing program applies the same cuts to the original file.
| You need | Choose |
|---|---|
| A video for YouTube, TikTok or a course | Video (MP4), “Like the original” |
| A smaller video for messengers | Video (MP4), “Smaller file” |
| A podcast episode | Sound only (M4A) |
| To keep editing in DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut | EDL or FCPXML cut list |
Questions you might still have
Is Cut Studio free?
Yes. It is free, without account or watermark, and your recording is never uploaded.
Will the speech sound unnatural?
Not with the default settings. A short breath stays at every cut, and each cut fades over a few milliseconds. If it feels rushed, raise “Pauses longer than” to one second.
Which files can I open?
Videos from phones and cameras such as MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and AVI, and sound files such as MP3, M4A and WAV.
Before you go
Start with the default threshold, listen once to the preview and adjust only if it feels too tight or too loose. That one listen turns a quick cut into a polished one.
