The short answer
Adult blue whales average about 82 ft (25 m) for males and 89 ft (27 m) for females, according to Animal Diversity Web, so Height Studio draws a typical adult at 85 ft (26 m). NOAA Fisheries gives up to about 110 ft (33.5 m) for the largest Antarctic blue whales. A typical adult is about 15 times as long as an average young man is tall and just over two city buses long.
Open the free toolHow long is a blue whale? Average and maximum length
An adult blue whale is usually 82 to 89 ft (25 to 27 m) long. Animal Diversity Web gives an average head-body length of 25 m for males and 27 m for females, so the females are the bigger sex. Height Studio uses the midpoint, 85 ft (26 m): a typical adult, not a record animal.
The ceiling is higher. NOAA Fisheries says Antarctic blue whales can reach up to about 110 ft (33.5 m), while blue whales in the North Atlantic and North Pacific grow up to about 90 ft (27.4 m). Those are maximums. When an article says a blue whale is 100 ft long, it describes the largest animals, which NOAA places in the Antarctic population, not the whale you are likely to see from a boat.
NOAA calls blue whales the largest animals ever known to have lived. A whale has no standing height, so Height Studio lays it on its side and measures it from snout to tail.
Blue whale size comparison to a human and an elephant
A typical blue whale is about 15 times as long as an average young man is tall. Height Studio’s reference man stands 5 ft 7 in (170.8 cm), the world mean for 19-year-old men in the NCD-RisC height data, and 26 m divided by 1.708 m comes to 15.2. Lay fifteen adults head to toe on a beach and you have roughly one blue whale.
An African elephant barely changes the picture. Adult bulls average 10 to 10.5 ft (3 to 3.2 m) at the shoulder, according to San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. The whale is more than eight times as long as that bull is tall. In the drawing below, all three figures use the same scale.
How big is a blue whale compared to a bus, a basketball court and a plane?
A blue whale is just over two city buses long. A standard Mercedes-Benz Citaro city bus measures 39 ft 10 in (12.135 m), so an 85 ft whale covers 2.1 of them. A few more everyday giants, each with its own source:
- Basketball court: FIBA’s rules set the court at 92 ft (28 m), so a typical blue whale would almost reach from one end to the other.
- Soccer field: FIFA recommends a 344 ft (105 m) field of play. Four average blue whales nose to tail are 104 m, almost exactly one field.
- Boeing 747-8: Lufthansa lists 250 ft (76.3 m), which equals 2.9 blue whales in a row.
- Airbus A380: Lufthansa lists 238 ft 7 in (72.73 m), or 2.8 blue whales.
Blue whale size comparison to a cruise ship and the Titanic
Even the largest animal is small next to a large ship. Icon of the Seas, which its builder Meyer Turku lists at 1,198 ft (365 m), is as long as 14 typical blue whales. The RMS Titanic, 882.6 ft (269 m) long according to the US Senate inquiry report, equals about ten.
Smaller and older ships are a closer match. The Gokstad Viking ship in Oslo is 75 ft (23 m) long, according to the Museum of the Viking Age, so a typical blue whale is about 10 ft longer than the whole ship. A full-scale replica of Columbus’s Santa María, built by Fundación Nao Victoria, measures 92 ft 10 in (28.3 m) at its longest, only about 7.5 ft more than the whale.
For the ships themselves, our Titanic size comparison guide lines up the Titanic with today’s cruise ships, an aircraft carrier and the longest tanker ever built.
Blue whale vs fin whale, sperm whale, whale shark and megalodon
No other living animal comes close in length. The fin whale is the nearest rival and is still about 20 ft (6 m) shorter on average. The table gives typical adult lengths, not records:
| Animal | Typical adult length | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Blue whale | 82–89 ft (25–27 m) | Animal Diversity Web |
| Fin whale | about 66 ft (20 m); range 62–89 ft (19–27 m) | Animal Diversity Web |
| Sperm whale, adult male | 49–59 ft (15–18 m) | American Cetacean Society |
| Humpback whale | 40–50 ft (12.2–15.2 m) | American Cetacean Society |
| Orca, adult male | about 26 ft (8 m) | Animal Diversity Web |
| Whale shark | 18–33 ft (5.5–10 m), common range | Georgia Aquarium |
| Megalodon (extinct, reconstruction) | about 52 ft (16 m) | Cooper et al., Scientific Reports 2020 |
Blue whale size comparison to dinosaurs
A few giant sauropods were longer than a blue whale. The Natural History Museum in London estimates Argentinosaurus at 115 ft (35 m) and Patagotitan at 123 ft (37.5 m), both reconstructed from incomplete skeletons. That makes them 1.35 and 1.44 times as long as a typical blue whale. Even the largest blue whales NOAA describes, up to about 110 ft (33.5 m), fall a little short of Argentinosaurus.
Most famous dinosaurs were far shorter. SUE, the Tyrannosaurus rex at the Field Museum in Chicago, is 40.5 ft (12.34 m) long, less than half a blue whale. A length comparison says nothing about weight.
Make your own blue whale size comparison
Find the whale
Open the animal size comparison. Under “Ideas to try”, pick “Whales & sea mammals” or “Giants of the sea”, or type “blue whale” into “Search the library”.
Add yourself
Open “Add person”, type your height (175 or 5′9″ both work) and press “Add to comparison”.
Line everything up by length
Set “Compare by” to “Length” to put the whale next to a bus, a plane or the Titanic from one start line.
Measure and share
Tap the whale to see how many times longer it is than the other figures, then use “Share link” or “Save PNG”. What you enter stays on your device.
Questions you might still have
How big is a blue whale compared to a human?
A typical adult, 85 ft (26 m) long, is about 15 times as long as an average young man is tall (5 ft 7 in / 170.8 cm). Fifteen adults lying head to toe would match one whale.
How long can a blue whale get?
NOAA Fisheries gives up to about 110 ft (33.5 m) for Antarctic blue whales and up to about 90 ft (27.4 m) in the North Atlantic and North Pacific. Typical adults are 82 to 89 ft (25 to 27 m), with females longer than males.
How big is a blue whale compared to a cruise ship?
Icon of the Seas, 1,198 ft (365 m) long, equals 14 typical blue whales nose to tail. The Titanic, 882.6 ft (269 m), equals about ten.
Was any dinosaur bigger than a blue whale?
Longer, yes: Argentinosaurus (about 115 ft / 35 m) and Patagotitan (about 123 ft / 37.5 m) are estimated to have been longer than even the largest blue whales. Both sizes are reconstructions from incomplete skeletons.
Is a blue whale bigger than a megalodon?
Yes. A 2020 reconstruction in Scientific Reports puts megalodon at about 52 ft (16 m), so a typical blue whale is about 33 ft (10 m) longer and 1.6 times as long.
Before you go
Check whether a blue whale size is an average (82 to 89 ft) or a maximum (up to about 110 ft). Next to fifteen people, two buses or a basketball court, either number becomes easy to picture.
