Megalodon shark size comparison: next to a great white, a person and a blue whale

Megalodon was a giant shark known almost only from its teeth, so every size you read is an estimate. Here is what the first full-body reconstruction says, and how that shark compares with sharks, whales and a sea reptile you can picture.

The short answer

A 2020 reconstruction in Scientific Reports puts a large megalodon at about 52 ft (16 m) long, with a head of about 15 ft (4.65 m) and a dorsal fin about 5 ft 4 in (1.62 m) tall. Earlier studies estimated a maximum of about 49 to 59 ft (15 to 18 m). That 52 ft shark is nearly four times as long as a typical adult great white and about 33 ft (10 m) shorter than a typical blue whale.

How big was megalodon? What the estimate is based on

Megalodon was about 52 ft (16 m) long in the first full-body reconstruction, published in 2020, but that number is an estimate, not a measurement. Otodus megalodon is known almost exclusively from fossilised teeth, as Cooper and colleagues write in Scientific Reports. Earlier studies scaled those teeth against the great white shark and arrived at a maximum total length of about 49 to 59 ft (15 to 18 m).

The 2020 study took a different route. Instead of copying the great white alone, it used body proportions from five living relatives: the great white, two mako species, the salmon shark and the porbeagle. For a 16 m megalodon, the model gives a head about 15 ft 3 in (4.65 m) long, a dorsal fin about 5 ft 4 in (1.62 m) tall and a tail about 12 ft 8 in (3.85 m) high. Height Studio draws megalodon at that 16 m length.

You will find other numbers online. Some are maximums, some are older tooth-based estimates, and some come from newer studies this guide has not reviewed. Treat any megalodon size as a range and check where it comes from.

Megalodon vs great white shark size comparison

Megalodon was nearly four times as long as a typical adult great white. The Florida Museum of Natural History says male great whites mature at about 11.5 to 13.5 ft (3.5 to 4.1 m) and females at about 14.8 to 16.4 ft (4.5 to 5 m). The museum gives no average adult length, so Height Studio uses the middle of that span, 13 ft 11 in (4.25 m). Divide 16 m by 4.25 m and you get 3.8.

The body parts make it clearer. The reconstructed megalodon head alone, about 15 ft (4.65 m), is longer than that typical great white. The dorsal fin, 5 ft 4 in (1.62 m), is almost as tall as an average young man, who stands 5 ft 7 in (170.8 cm) in the NCD-RisC world data.

A young man of average height, a great white shark, a whale shark and megalodon drawn side by side to the same scale.
To scale: a young man of world-average height (5 ft 7 in / 170.8 cm), a great white shark (13 ft 11 in / 4.25 m), a whale shark (25 ft 5 in / 7.75 m, middle of the common adult range) and megalodon (52 ft 6 in / 16 m, 2020 reconstruction).

Megalodon vs blue whale size comparison

A typical blue whale was longer than even a large megalodon. At 85 ft 4 in (26 m), the average adult blue whale in Height Studio, based on Animal Diversity Web, is about 33 ft (10 m) longer than the 16 m reconstruction, or 1.6 times its length. Next to the largest Antarctic blue whales NOAA Fisheries describes, up to about 110 ft (33.5 m), megalodon would be less than half as long.

This comparison covers length only. A shark and a whale are built differently, so the same length does not mean the same bulk. For the whale on its own, next to buses, planes and ships, see our guide on how big a blue whale is.

Mosasaurus, megalodon and a blue whale drawn one after another to the same scale, the blue whale the longest.
To scale: Mosasaurus (37 ft 9 in / 11.5 m), megalodon (52 ft 6 in / 16 m, 2020 reconstruction) and a blue whale (85 ft 4 in / 26 m).

Mosasaurus vs megalodon: which was bigger?

On the numbers Height Studio uses, megalodon was longer. Mosasaurus was a marine reptile, not a shark. The Natural History Museum in London notes that some scientists think the biggest Mosasaurus hoffmannii reached 56 to 59 ft (17 to 18 m), while others consider 36 to 39 ft (11 to 12 m) more likely. The library uses the middle of the more likely range, 37 ft 9 in (11.5 m), which makes megalodon about 15 ft (4.5 m) longer.

If the larger estimate is right, a big Mosasaurus would have matched or passed the 16 m megalodon. Both lengths are extrapolations, from skulls for Mosasaurus and from teeth for megalodon, so neither answer is final.

Megalodon size compared to sharks alive today

No living shark matches megalodon at a typical adult size. The table lists common adult lengths from aquarium and museum species pages:

How big was megalodon compared to a bus, an orca and a person?

A 52 ft megalodon is about one and a third city buses long. A Mercedes-Benz Citaro measures 39 ft 10 in (12.135 m), so megalodon would stick out past its rear by nearly 13 ft (3.9 m). Other comparisons from the same library:

  • Person: more than nine times the height of an average young man (5 ft 7 in / 170.8 cm).
  • Orca: an adult male averages about 26 ft (8 m), according to Animal Diversity Web, so megalodon was twice as long.
  • Basketball court: megalodon covers a little more than half of a 92 ft (28 m) FIBA court.

Make your own megalodon size comparison

  1. Open the shark size comparison

It opens with a diver next to sharks from the bull shark up to megalodon, all at the same scale.

  2. Add a whale or a sea reptile

Type “blue whale” or “Mosasaurus” into “Search the library” and add it to the line-up.

  3. Add yourself

Under “Add person”, enter your height and press “Add to comparison”.

  4. Measure and share

Tap megalodon to see how many times longer it is than each figure, then use “Share link” or “Save PNG”.

Questions you might still have

How big was megalodon compared to a great white shark?

About 3.8 times as long: the 2020 reconstruction gives 52 ft (16 m), and a typical adult great white is about 14 ft (4.25 m). The megalodon head alone, about 15 ft (4.65 m), was longer than that great white.

Was megalodon bigger than a blue whale?

No. A typical adult blue whale is about 85 ft (26 m), roughly 33 ft (10 m) longer than the 16 m megalodon reconstruction. The largest blue whales, up to about 110 ft (33.5 m) according to NOAA, were more than twice as long.

Was megalodon bigger than Mosasaurus?

Most likely yes. The Natural History Museum calls 36 to 39 ft (11 to 12 m) the more likely Mosasaurus length, well short of megalodon’s 52 ft (16 m). Some scientists suggest up to 59 ft (18 m) for the biggest Mosasaurus, which would change the answer.

Is a whale shark bigger than megalodon?

Not at typical sizes: a common adult whale shark is 18 to 33 ft (5.5 to 10 m). The largest whale shark ever measured, 61.7 ft (18.8 m) according to Georgia Aquarium, was longer than the 16 m megalodon reconstruction.

Why do megalodon sizes differ so much?

Because no complete skeleton exists. Lengths are worked out from teeth and from the body proportions of living sharks, and different methods and fossils give different results. Quote a size together with its source and whether it is a typical or a maximum value.
