NIGHTSPARK: a five-minute roguelite you can play in your browser

You have five minutes and want something with real bite. NIGHTSPARK puts one tiny mage against far too many monsters, and your only job is to move, dodge and pick the right upgrades.

The short answer

Open NIGHTSPARK and start a run with Spark. Move with WASD or by dragging on a phone; your spells fire on their own. Press Space or Shift to Blink through attacks, pick one upgrade after each level-up and survive four one-minute waves until the boss.

What kind of game is NIGHTSPARK?

NIGHTSPARK is a colourful action roguelite in the style of the auto-attack survival games many people know from phones and PC. Your spells aim themselves, so your hands are free for the important part: moving, dodging and choosing upgrades that turn a small spark into a storm of fire, frost and lightning.

A campaign run is four one-minute waves followed by a boss, so most runs take about five minutes. That makes it a good fit for a short break, and the next run is always one click away.

Losing is part of the plan. Every run, won or lost, adds permanent shards and elemental mastery, so you get a little stronger each time. There are 18 campaign encounters to clear, five heroes to unlock and earned gear and talents to equip.

Your first run, step by step

You only need two buttons to start. Everything else the game explains as you go.

  1. Move and keep moving

WASD, ZQSD or the arrow keys move your mage. On a phone or tablet, touch and drag anywhere on the playfield.

  2. Blink through danger

Space or Shift blinks a short distance and makes you briefly invulnerable. On touch screens the Blink button sits on the right.

  3. Pick an upgrade

After each level-up, choose one of three upgrades with 1, 2 or 3 or by clicking.

  4. Use your signature ability

E fires your hero’s signature move. Save it for crowded moments or the boss.

  5. Beat the boss

After four waves the boss arrives. Watch its warning lanes and danger zones, and Blink through them rather than running around them.

Builds that work: pick one element

There are 24 upgrades and 11 combinations, which can feel like a lot at first. The simplest rule: lean into one element. Fire burns, frost slows and lightning chains from enemy to enemy.

Many upgrades evolve at levels 8 and 16, and an evolved spell is far stronger than two half-built ones. Choosing the same element again and again gets you there sooner.

Healing shrines take 2.5 seconds to charge, so clear some space before you step in. Between rounds, run essence buys pacts at the Rift Forge. Each pact has a real trade-off, so read both sides before you take it.

Five mistakes that end early runs

Most lost runs come down to the same few habits. Fixing them helps more than any single upgrade.

  • Standing still. Enemies announce attacks with warning lanes and danger zones, and moving early is easier than escaping late.
  • Spreading upgrades across every element. Evolutions at levels 8 and 16 reward sticking with one.
  • Stepping into a healing shrine in the middle of a crowd. It needs 2.5 seconds to charge, so clear the area first.
  • Never using the signature ability. E is there for the moments when the screen fills up; an ability you never fire does nothing.
  • Skipping the menu between runs. Equip the gear and talents you have earned before the next run starts.

Heroes, gear and progress that stays

Spark is ready for your first run. Ember, Yuki, Volt and Bram unlock through play, for example by finishing runs or defeating bosses. Each hero has a starting spell, strengths and a signature ability, such as Ember’s Sunflare Cleave or Volt’s Thunderstep.

Permanent shards, elemental mastery, equipment and talent ranks stay unlocked, whether a run went well or not. Before a new run, equip the gear and talents you have earned; they make the early waves noticeably easier.

Endless Rift, Daily Rift and comfortable play

Endless Rift keeps going after the boss with rotating encounters. It opens through the Journey, a list of 91 objectives, along with weekly trials. Daily Rift gives everyone the same starting build and ignores gear and talents, so it is a fair test of pure skill.

NIGHTSPARK runs on computers and phones in portrait or landscape, with automatic or manual graphics quality for slower devices. There are lots of flashing spell effects; screen shake can be switched off, and character motion follows your device’s reduced-motion setting.

Progress saves automatically in this browser, with checkpoints that let you resume an interrupted run. Clearing site data or a private window removes the save, and it does not move between devices on its own.
