P0011: intake camshaft timing over-advanced (bank 1)
P0011 means the variable valve timing on bank 1 turned the intake camshaft further than the engine computer asked, or did not follow its command. Oil is the first suspect: level, age and viscosity. The oil control valve comes next.

Connect your OBD2 adapter
- Plug the adapter into the OBD2 port – usually under the steering wheel, near the pedals.
- Switch the ignition on, or start the engine.
- Bluetooth adapter? Turn Bluetooth on. Nothing else to set up.
This browser cannot talk to OBD adapters. Use Chrome or Edge on Android, Windows or Mac – on iPhone, the free Bluefy browser works with Bluetooth LE adapters. The demo car works everywhere.
Classic Bluetooth adapter (PIN 1234)? Pair it in your system settings first, then choose USB or paired Bluetooth – on a computer or in Chrome 138+ on Android. Wi-Fi adapters cannot work in a browser.
Your car data stays on your device. The page talks to the adapter directly; codes, VIN and values are never uploaded.
Never use it while you drive. Set things up before you set off, or let a passenger handle the phone. Standard OBD2 reads engine and emissions data; ABS, airbag and coding need workshop equipment.
What P0011 means
Variable valve timing turns the intake camshaft a little relative to the crankshaft to give the engine more power or efficiency at different speeds. A solenoid, the oil control valve, sends engine oil to the phaser on the camshaft, and the engine computer compares the camshaft angle it commanded with the angle the sensor reports.
When the camshaft is more advanced than commanded, or reacts too slowly, the computer stores P0011. Some makers define the code as timing over-advanced, others as system performance; the checks are the same.
Symptoms of P0011
- Rough or unstable idle, sometimes stalling.
- Hesitation and less power, especially at low engine speed.
- Higher fuel consumption.
- A brief rattle at start-up on some engines.
Causes of P0011, cheapest first
Work down the list in order: the first checks cost little or nothing, the last ones are jobs for a workshop.
Engine oil
Too little oil, old oil or the wrong viscosity changes how the phaser reacts. Top up or change the oil first, using the specified grade.
The oil control valve
Dirt or sludge can make the valve stick. Many are held by a single bolt, and some have a small screen that clogs. Checking and cleaning it is cheap.
Wiring to the control valve
A damaged plug or wire means the valve gets the wrong signal. Look for corrosion and make sure the plug sits firmly.
The cam phaser
A phaser with a worn locking pin or seals cannot hold its position. It is a bigger job, usually done together with the timing chain.
Timing chain wear
A stretched chain shifts the base position of the camshaft. If P0016 appears too, have the timing checked.
Can you drive with P0011?
Drive on carefully, fix it soon. The engine usually keeps running, but it may idle poorly and stall at junctions. Change or top up the oil right away, then have it checked within a few weeks, sooner if the engine rattles or stalls.
Check P0011 with OBD Studio
Connect your adapter above, or try the demo car, then:
- Check the oil before anything else.
- In Fault codes, look for P0016 or P0012 alongside: they help to tell a sticking phaser from a timing chain problem.
- The freeze frame shows whether the fault appeared at idle, at cold start or under load.
- After an oil change or a valve repair, clear the code and watch whether it returns as a pending code over the next drives.

Frequently asked questions
Can an oil change fix P0011?
Quite often, if the oil was low, old or of the wrong viscosity. Use the grade the manufacturer specifies, clear the code and see whether it returns.
What is the difference between P0011 and P0016?
P0011 says the variable valve timing does not reach the commanded position. P0016 says camshaft and crankshaft do not match at all, which can also mean a stretched timing chain or a sensor fault.
Is it safe to drive with P0011?
For short distances, usually yes, but the engine may stall or run poorly. Do not ignore it for long, especially if it comes with a rattle.
Can I read P0011 without going to a workshop?
Yes. With any ELM327-compatible Bluetooth LE or USB adapter, OBD Studio on this page reads P0011 and every other stored code for free, shows the freeze frame and clears the code after the repair. Nothing to install, no account.
