P0172: system too rich (bank 1)
P0172 means bank 1 of the engine gets too much fuel for the air it breathes, and the computer can no longer take enough fuel away. Typical reasons are a purge valve stuck open, fuel in the oil, a leaking injector or a sensor that misreports temperature or air flow.

Connect your OBD2 adapter
- Plug the adapter into the OBD2 port – usually under the steering wheel, near the pedals.
- Switch the ignition on, or start the engine.
- Bluetooth adapter? Turn Bluetooth on. Nothing else to set up.
This browser cannot talk to OBD adapters. Use Chrome or Edge on Android, Windows or Mac – on iPhone, the free Bluefy browser works with Bluetooth LE adapters. The demo car works everywhere.
Classic Bluetooth adapter (PIN 1234)? Pair it in your system settings first, then choose USB or paired Bluetooth – on a computer or in Chrome 138+ on Android. Wi-Fi adapters cannot work in a browser.
Your car data stays on your device. The page talks to the adapter directly; codes, VIN and values are never uploaded.
Never use it while you drive. Set things up before you set off, or let a passenger handle the phone. Standard OBD2 reads engine and emissions data; ABS, airbag and coding need workshop equipment.
What P0172 means
The front O2 sensor tells the engine computer whether the exhaust contains leftover fuel (rich) or leftover oxygen (lean). When the mixture is rich, the computer shortens the injection time; this correction shows up as negative fuel trims. When the long-term trim reaches the end of its range, on many cars around minus 25 percent, the computer stores P0172.
A rich engine wastes fuel, soots up its spark plugs and sends unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, which can overheat it. If P0175 is stored as well, both banks run rich and the cause sits in a part they share.
Symptoms of P0172
- Higher fuel consumption and a smell of petrol from the exhaust.
- Black smoke or soot at the tailpipe.
- A rough idle and sooty spark plugs; in time, misfires.
- Sometimes P0420 later, once the converter has suffered.
Causes of P0172, cheapest first
Work down the list in order: the first checks cost little or nothing, the last ones are jobs for a workshop.
A purge valve stuck open
The EVAP purge valve should open only while the engine is warm and running. If it stays open, fuel vapor floods the intake, especially at idle and after refuelling. Watch the fuel trims right after filling up.
Fuel in the engine oil
Many short trips leave fuel in the oil, and the crankcase ventilation feeds those vapors back into the intake. If the oil smells of petrol or the level rises, change the oil.
A coolant temperature sensor that reads too cold
If the sensor tells the computer the engine is cold, it adds fuel as on a cold start. Compare its value with the temperature gauge and, on a cold engine, with the intake air temperature.
A faulty air flow sensor
A sensor that reports more air than actually flows makes the computer inject too much fuel. Clean it and check that its reading rises and falls smoothly with engine speed.
A front O2 sensor that reads lean
An old sensor stuck on lean makes the computer add fuel the engine does not need. The live graph shows whether it still switches properly.
Leaking injectors or too much fuel pressure
A dripping injector or a faulty pressure regulator delivers more fuel than commanded. A workshop can measure the fuel pressure and test the injectors.
Can you drive with P0172?
Drive gently, fix it soon. The car usually still drives well, but every kilometre with a rich mixture costs fuel and heats up the catalytic converter. Have it fixed within days to a few weeks, and sooner if the engine misfires or the light starts to flash.
Check P0172 with OBD Studio
Connect your adapter above, or try the demo car, then:
- In Live data, show the short-term and long-term fuel trim of bank 1. Clearly negative values, below about minus 10 percent together, confirm a rich mixture.
- Watch the trims at idle and right after refuelling: if they get much richer then, suspect the purge valve.
- Compare Coolant temperature with the dashboard gauge, and Air flow (MAF) with engine speed and load.
- Graph the front O2 sensor: a classic sensor should keep switching between about 0.1 and 0.9 V, not sit at one end.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most common cause of P0172?
There is no single favourite: purge valves stuck open, fuel in the engine oil, leaking injectors and wrong sensor readings all appear often. Live fuel trims at idle and at higher engine speed narrow it down quickly.
Can a dirty air filter cause P0172?
On modern engines with an air flow sensor it rarely does, because the sensor measures the air that actually gets through. On older engines, or with a badly blocked filter, it is still worth a look; it is the cheapest check.
Can P0172 damage my engine?
Not quickly, but over time a rich mixture thins the engine oil with fuel, fouls the spark plugs and overheats the catalytic converter. That is why it is worth fixing soon, even when the car drives normally.
Can I read P0172 without going to a workshop?
Yes. With any ELM327-compatible Bluetooth LE or USB adapter, OBD Studio on this page reads P0172 and every other stored code for free, shows the freeze frame and clears the code after the repair. Nothing to install, no account.
