From paper to a transparent PNG
This page opens Image Studio with the background tools first and PNG already chosen.
Open the photo or scan
Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, photograph it straight on in good light, then open the file here.
Remove the paper
Leave “Solid background color” on white and press “Remove matching color”. Raise “Tolerance” a little if grey paper spots stay.
Check the strokes and save
Look at thin lines and the ends of letters, then press “Create my image” and download the PNG.
A photo with shadows or lined paper needs a bit more care: crop tightly and use the brush for leftovers.

If parts of a light ballpoint line disappear, lower “Tolerance”. Single gaps come back with the brush mode “Restore subject”; small paper leftovers go with “Erase background”. Use a small brush and short strokes, and undo when you slip.

Put the PNG into your document
Insert the saved PNG as a picture in Word, Pages, Google Docs or a PDF editor that places images, and scale it from the corners so it keeps its shape. A line under the signature should show through. The result is a picture of your handwriting, not a certified electronic signature.

Scanned signature: start with a clean picture
Sign your name on smooth white paper with a dark pen, then photograph the sheet straight on, in daylight or under an even lamp. A shadow from your phone becomes part of the area you later have to remove, and lined or squared paper adds more of it.
Crop the picture around the signature but leave a little room beyond the outer loops, because the end of a letter is easy to clip. Keep the picture large while you check the edges; you shrink it to signature size only in your document. A stroke that is already cut off in the scan cannot be brought back, so take the photo again.
Signature as a JPG? Make the background transparent
A JPG works as a starting point. The see-through area is made in Image Studio when you remove the background color, and you save the result as a PNG. Open the background section and use the color removal for the paper; the AI cut-out is made for people and objects, not for a flat sheet.
Pick the paper color
Under “Solid background color” choose the color of the paper. For a clean white scan, start with white.
Remove it and check
Press “Remove matching color”. If pale paper islands remain, raise “Tolerance” in small steps and watch dots, thin upstrokes and crossings: the paper should go, the signature should stay connected.
Thin pen strokes and pale edges
Check the weakest part of your signature first, such as a short arc at the start or a faint ballpoint line. If it vanishes, lower “Tolerance”. Single lost bits come back with the brush mode “Restore subject”, small paper leftovers go with “Erase background”.
A thin white fringe does not always show on the checkerboard. Look at the preview over a colored background, then set the background back to “Transparent” for the download. Judge the result at the size you will print it: a line that looks tidy when zoomed in can still blur as a small signature.
Insert the transparent PNG into your document
Choose PNG for the download, because the format keeps the transparent areas; renaming a JPG to .png does not. Insert the file as a picture, shrink it with the corner handles to a natural signature size and check that a line underneath stays visible.
Image Studio makes the image file; it does not place it inside an existing PDF for you, and it does not create a certified electronic signature. If you want to fine-tune the pixels later, also save the editable project; for inserting, the finished PNG is all you need.

Frequently asked questions
Is a scanned signature a legal electronic signature?
It is a picture of your handwriting. Whether that is enough depends on the document and the recipient. A qualified electronic signature under EU rules needs a certified trust service provider; this tool does not create one.
Does it work with a blue pen or a pencil?
Yes, as long as the line is clearly darker than the paper. Dark ink on smooth white paper works best. Pencil and very light ballpoint need a lower “Tolerance” and a closer look at thin strokes.
How do I insert a signature without a white background in Word?
Make the signature transparent here and save the PNG. In Word, insert it as a picture, set the text wrapping to “In front of text” if you want to place it over a line, and scale it from a corner.
Can I make my signature transparent for free?
