Your photos stay on this device. Editing, AI background removal and export run in your browser; nothing is uploaded. The AI files download from this website only the first time you remove a background.
Good to know: AI cut-outs vary with the picture, and fine hair or glass can need a touch-up with the brush. Only edit images you have the right to use (terms of use).
Three steps
How to make a YouTube thumbnail
This page opens with text and shapes first and the YouTube preset already chosen. Every photo you open is cropped to 16:9 around its center.
Start with a photo or a layout
Open a still from your video or any photo, or begin with the Gaming title layout on a YouTube canvas.
Add the hook
Use + Text for three to five big words, then pick a heavy font such as Oswald, an outline and a drop shadow or neon glow, so it still reads at a small size.
Export as JPG
JPG at 1280 × 720 is light and sharp. Keep it below 2 MB if you upload from the YouTube app on a phone.
Want your face cut out in front of a colored background? Remove background works on the same canvas.
Size and format
YouTube thumbnail size and format
- Shape: 16:9, like the video player. The YouTube preset gives 1280 × 720, the classic size; YouTube 4K gives the 3840 × 2160 that YouTube now recommends for large screens.
- Minimum: 640 pixels wide.
- Format: JPG or PNG. JPG keeps photos small, PNG suits flat graphics.
- File size: up to 50 MB in YouTube Studio on a computer, up to 2 MB in the mobile app.
These are YouTube’s own requirements as of October 2026. If an upload is refused, check YouTube Help.

What makes a thumbnail work
- Few, big words: thumbnails are often seen at phone size. Three to five words in a heavy font beat a full sentence.
- Contrast: light text on a dark area, or the other way round. An outline of 4 to 8 keeps letters readable on busy photos.
- One clear subject: a face or an object, cut out with Remove background and set against a plain color or a gradient.
- Keep the bottom right free: YouTube shows the video length there.

How to make YouTube thumbnails?
Build a thumbnail around one clear subject and a short message.
Start with the thumbnail preset, pick the meaningful subject and inspect the composition at its small viewing size.
Choose the frame and main subject
Image Studio can combine your photo with text, shapes and effects, but the layout still needs a decision about emphasis. Before opening the editor, write the main idea in a few ordinary words. For example, an imaginary repair video might use “Fix the loose chair” rather than a long sentence describing every stage. The words should accurately represent the video; a more dramatic title does not improve an unrelated preview. Choose the YouTube thumbnail preset to start with a wide 1280 × 720 canvas. This is a tool preset, not a claim that every publishing destination uses the same rules. Review YouTube’s current thumbnail guidance before uploading, especially its supported files and size limits.
YouTube thumbnail text ideas: make one short title readable
Use one short title with a clear emphasis; give secondary information a separate, less prominent text element.
If you start from a portrait photo, inspect the crop carefully. A face near the edge can disappear when the frame becomes wide. Reposition the crop before building text around it, so later corrections do not force the whole composition to move. Place text where it does not cover the important action or expression. Use separate elements for a title and a small secondary label. If the title needs several lines, read each line at a small preview size. A narrow typeface can fit more words but still be harder to recognize in a feed. Increase contrast before increasing effects. An outline or shadow can separate letters from a busy image; several strong effects together can make edges look crowded instead of clearer.
Give the cutout and text room
Compose the picture and text in Image Studio, then download the finished graphic for your own publishing workflow.
Background removal can create room for text when the subject is easy to isolate. Inspect hair and object edges before placing the cutout on a strong color. A poor mask becomes more visible on a clean graphic background than in the original scene. You can also retain the photograph and place text over a quieter region. Cutting everything out is not a required design step. Choose the arrangement that explains the video with the least visual competition between the person, the object and the words. Preview a reduced version to judge hierarchy. The large editor makes tiny details seem more useful than they will be in a browsing list. Check whether a viewer can identify the subject before reading the text and whether the words still make sense without the surrounding video title.
Inspect the small preview and final export
The tool’s wide thumbnail preset is 1280 × 720. Check YouTube’s current upload guidance for the destination’s requirements.
Keep key material away from the extreme edges so a small display or an overlaid interface element is less likely to hide it. These are composition checks, not a promise about click rates or channel growth. Export a finished JPG or another file type the destination currently accepts. Inspect the actual weight if a limit applies; dimensions alone do not determine file size. Save the project so another episode can reuse the layout without copying a flattened image. Change every episode-specific reference, including small labels that are easy to overlook. Keep any original photo and working project under your control. Share the final thumbnail when the publishing collaborator does not need the underlying image or editable layers.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
YouTube uses a 16:9 shape. 1280 × 720 is the classic size and works everywhere; YouTube’s help now recommends 3840 × 2160 for 4K screens. A thumbnail must be at least 640 pixels wide.
Is this YouTube thumbnail maker free?
Yes. No account, no watermark and no paid fonts or templates. Your photo is edited in your browser and never uploaded.
Should I save my thumbnail as JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos – it stays small and sharp. PNG for flat graphics with few colors. Fill the whole 16:9 canvas: transparent areas do nothing for a thumbnail.
Why does YouTube say my thumbnail is too large?
The mobile app accepts thumbnails up to 2 MB. Enter 2000 in Max. size (KB), keep JPG and create the image again; at 1280 × 720 that is rarely needed.
Can I put my face in front of a new background?
Yes. Open your photo, choose Remove background with the Portrait mode, pick a color, a gradient or another picture under Replace with, and add your text on top.
