Start with a photo the AI can read
Background removal works best when the subject clearly stands out: a dark bag in front of a light wall, a person against an open sky. Keep the whole subject in the frame; crop afterwards rather than before, so the AI sees complete shapes.
Fine hair, fur, glass and soft shadows are the hardest parts for any AI. They are not a reason to give up, but plan a minute for the brush afterwards.
Cut out the subject in five steps
Choose the photo
Select “Choose an image” and pick a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photo. It opens in your browser and is not uploaded. Large phone photos are scaled to 24 megapixels for editing.
Pick the AI mode
Under “AI mode”, keep “General subject” for products, pets, cars and objects. Choose “Portrait / people” for a person: it follows hair and shoulders more closely.
Remove the background
Select “Remove background”. The first time, the AI files load from this website, about 19 MB for General or 21 MB for Portrait; after that it starts at once.
Check the edges
Transparent areas appear as a checkerboard in the preview. Zoom in on hair, fingers and thin parts before you continue.
Export as PNG
Choose “PNG” under “Format”, then “Create my image” and “Download PNG”. PNG and WebP keep the transparency; JPG would fill it with a solid colour.
Fix edges the AI missed
Set “Brush mode” to “Erase background” and paint over leftovers, such as a piece of wall between an arm and the body. Switch to “Restore subject” to bring back something the AI removed by mistake, like a strap or a strand of hair. “Restore full image” starts again from the original.
For a logo or a signature on a plain backdrop, the AI is not even needed: pick the backdrop under “Solid background color” and select “Remove matching color”. Raise “Tolerance” a little if a faint edge remains.
Put the subject on a new background
You do not always need transparency. Under “Replace with”, choose “Solid color”, “Gradient” or “Your background image”. Many marketplaces ask for a plain white background: choose white and export as JPG, which is smaller than PNG.
“Subject shadow” adds a soft shadow below the cut-out, so a product does not look as if it were floating.
| Use | Background | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Logo, sticker, presentation | Transparent | PNG |
| Shop listing on white | Solid color, white | JPG |
| Social media post | Gradient or your image | JPG or WebP |
Your photo stays on your device
The background removal runs in your browser. Only the AI files come from this website, once; your photo is never sent to a server. That matters for pictures of people, documents or unreleased products. Only edit images you are allowed to use.
Questions you might still have
Is the background removal free?
Yes. Image Studio is free, without account or watermark. Exports go up to 16 megapixels and 8,192 pixels per side.
Why does my PNG look black or white behind the subject?
Some image viewers show transparency as black or white. Place the PNG on a coloured slide or open it in an editor to see the checkerboard, which proves the background is really transparent.
Which is better: PNG or WebP?
Both keep transparency. PNG works everywhere, including older programs; WebP is usually smaller and fine for websites. If you are unsure, choose PNG.
Before you go
A clean cut-out is mostly about a good starting photo and one careful look at the edges. Spend that minute with the brush, and the result looks professional on any background.
